The recruitment of teachers for the public education system is an annual exercise. Director of Education, Dominique McCartney-Russell recently spoke exclusively with ZNS News on the ministry’s efforts to ensure the complement of teachers is sufficient to meet the needs of students.
She said, “we are now only in need of 55 professionals. The needs are in Language Arts, we need eight teachers. Technical studies, we need six persons. Performing Arts, you know we have a thrust on performing arts particularly because of what it does for cognitive development and so we need seven persons and we need six early childhood educators and some other small areas like Visual Arts, we need eight people.”
McCartney Russell also explained that the inclusion of foreign teachers in the public education system is only in positions which the ministry is unable to find Bahamians teachers to fill. “The areas that our expats fill include special education and our technical subjects, technical in particular, our technical studies. So you’re looking at electrical installation, plumbing and construction technology.”
According to the education director retired teachers will also be used to fill the existing 55 vacancies as they continue to re for teachers.
