Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador, the Hon. Philip Davis addressed the issue of crime in the country in the House of Assembly on Wednesday.
Davis told Parliamentarians that his administrations plan to combat crime “is grounded in the certain knowledge that the security of our citizens is our number one responsibility. We recognize that the root of criminality are deep and tangled. They stem from social, economic and cultural factors. Our response therefore, is likewise multifaceted and robust addressing each of these aspects with the seriousness they deserve.”
In his presentation the Prime Minister also revealed a proposed amendment to the Bail Act. ”Our amendment will ensure that bail is automatically revoked for those accused persons who commit offences while on bail. This includes those found to be in violation of the terms of their bail which is an offence under the amendment. This measure sends a clear message our legal system will no longer tolerate those who flout its rules and endanger our communities.”
The Prime Minister added, “overall our comprehensive is at the heart of a bold determination by my government to combat the scourge of crime which has long plague our society.”
On January 14th, Davis delivered a national address on crime where he outlined this administration’s plans to fight crime. It included a five point approach including: prevention, policing/detection, prosecution, punishment and rehabilitation.
