Among the senior officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force promoted on Monday was newly appointed Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shanta Knowles. Knowles has been given charge of the northern Bahamas making her the first female officer in history to hold the post.

Assistant Commissioner Knowles spoke with reporters about her appointment. “Let me first say that I give all of this, I give all glory to God. I thank Him for allowing me to be in this position that I am in today to be able to be able to serve the people of my country but more specifically the people of Grand Bahama. I am elated that the Commissioner has chosen me to be the first female to command the northern Bahamas. I am going over there with a heavy heart but of course I’m going to remain humble. I believe that once I get on the ground and I’m familiar with the officers who are assigned to that district I believe that our work in Grand Bahama will continue with what I’m seeing. Let me say that I’ve been looking at the statistics for Grand Bahama and while I won’t speak to statistics I can say that the officers of Grand Bahama have been doing an excellent job. And so I will add to that and I hope and pray that they welcome me with open arms.”

Knowles replaces Assistant Commissioner of Police Bernard K. Bonamy who is set to retire from policing.
