Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey joined with the students, teachers and faculty at Jack Hayward Junior High School on March 9, 2026 in celebration of the 77th anniversary Commonwealth Day.
In her remarks, Minister Moxey highlighted the school’s accomplishments and reminded the students that they are a part of a global community that believes young people can shape the future.
“The Commonwealth of Nations comprise 56 countries that support each other and work together and today we are celebrating our unity and connection. At this moment, students your age in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Pacific and the Caribbean are gathering, performing, learning – talking about their futures and celebrating their cultures,” she said.
Minister Moxey told the youngsters that they may never meet those students, but they are connected by common goals and hopes.
“We come from different continents, speak different languages and have different cultures, yet we share important values like respect, fairness and helping one another grow,” she said.
While reflecting on this year’s theme: “Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth,” Minister Moxey said it means that when we work together, more doors open for everyone.
“Commonwealth Day, most importantly, is about people; especially you. Not just about governance and leaders. So, every time you work hard in class, respect someone who is different from you, stand up for what’s right, or help a classmate succeed, you are showing the same values that the Commonwealth believes in,” she said.
She also thanked the teachers for the amazing work that they have been doing that has helped the school to excel.
To commemorate the occasion, the students exhibited the vibrant colours of the Commonwealth in a parade of flags from each country, played the national anthem of various countries, offered Bahamian-infused musical renditions, showed off our Rake N’ Scrape heritage, delivered the Speech from the Throne, hosted a mini fashion show and recited poems.
