The Grand Bahama Children’s Home is operating at capacity according to the home’s director.
While visiting Grand Bahama the Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe commented on the issue saying two additional houses will be ready in April. He said, “we intend to get the boys home going also we intend to open a center for girls.”
The minister also spoke to the need for a call center stating there is a need for daily conversation. “I know in circumstances when people have come to my office threatening suicide or talking about their difficulties a conversation means a lot,” he said.
Director of the children’s home June Hutcheson, for her part, stressed that parents need to take responsibility for their children. She said, “the child is a primary focus, a sacrifice you have to make is for the child because you brought them here, that’s a choice you made. And so you have to just sit back and provide for that child the best you can.”
