Commissioner of Police, Shanta Knowles held a press event on Tuesday where she released the crime statistics for 2025.
According to Knowles murders in the country declined by 31% in 2025 compared to the previous year. There were 121 homicides in 2024 and 83 in 2025. She told reporters these numbers represent the largest decrease since the Royal Bahamas Police Force began compiling statistics in 1963. Seventy six of the all homicides occurred in New Providence, 3 in Grand Bahama and the Northern District and 4 on the family islands with a solvency rate of 65%.
She said, “notably, this is the lowest amount of murders every recorded in an all equal policing environment since 2008 when 73 murders were recorded and in 2020, an anomaly year, when 73 murders were also recorded.”
The Commissioner also revealed that armed robberies also declined by 39% in 2025 with 162 cases reported compared to 265 cases in 2024, housebreakings also fell by 49%. “Burglaries decreased by 28% and shop breakings decreased by 13%. This trio of offenses recorded the lowest amount on record in the history of the force since tracking began in 1963.”
Reported rape cases declined by 18% in 2025 with 50 cases in 2025 company to 60 in 2024. The recorded number is the lowest it has been since 2021. Commissioner Knowles said, “unlawful sexual intercourse decreased by 18% with 115 incidents. This figure represents the lowest amount of unlawful sexual intercourse ever recorded in the history of the force since tracking begun in 1992.”
The numbers for the seizure of illegal firearms and drugs were also revealed. Three hundred and sixty six firearms and 11,238 rounds of ammunition were taken off the streets. Knowles said, “as a testament to our resolve we have seized more drugs than we did the year before with an estimated 4772.5 pounds of marijuana and 5,876 pounds of cocaine.”
