Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dr. Chaswell Hanna is appealing to the public for their assistance in the fight against crime after a spree of murders over the holidays into the new year.
In an interview with ZNS News Dr. Hanna said, ”there are more members of the public than there are police officers. So there’s no way we could be successful at what we do without the support of the public. I can say that the public has been very supportive through Urban Renewal and any number of programs. We want that support to continue and to be strengthened particularly in these times. So there’s information on crimes, information of contraband, drugs, weapons, we want the members of the public to feel comfortable coming to us. In fact in all of our communities everybody has a relative on the force or has a friend on the force so if you feel more comfortable speaking with them do just that. We need the information. We also want to work together to keep our Bahamas safe.”
The Assistant Commissioner, who has charge of school policing, also spoke to the role of parents in raising law abiding children. ”The role of raising a child is non transferrable. From time to time we see parents coming to school and our police stations, they really don’t want nothing to do with their kids. They want the police to raise their kids, for lack of a better word. While we support these parents and offer assistance where we can, we want parents to understand its your responsibility. We’re gonna assist where we could. In the schools we’re gonna assist where we could but we want parents to understand that they have a very, very important responsibility,” he said.
Dr. Hanna said the police cannot do it on their own and all hands must be on deck.
