Questions are mounting about the redevelopment of the Grand Lucayan Resort. A heads of agreement was signed between the government and Concord Wilshire for the property’s redevelopment in May of last year.
Since then there has been reports of delayed salary payments for employees and non-payment of national insurance contributions. An employee of the resort spoke with ZNS News on condition of anonymity on Wednesday.
According to the employee the status of their employment at the resort is uncertain. “You just came to the gate one day and they say your name is not on the list and that was it. Nobody said anything, nobody did anything. You don’t know if you’re working. You don’t know if you’re not working. You’re not being paid, you’re bills are there and that’s it, no money coming in.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Progressive Liberal Party Chairman, the Hon. Fred Mitchell was asked about the status of the project. He said, “the actual development of it is a work in progress. I understand there’s some due diligence issues connected with pay. But the government itself is going up to Grand Bahama on the 26th. The Cabinet is going to meet on Tuesday of next week and the Prime Minister promises a relaunch of all the issues which he’ll announce to the country what’s happening with Grand Bahama. So you’ll know then. I wouldn’t want to try and prescribe what he says in connection with it.”
