The Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Jomo Campbell announced a new school farming initiative at a press event held on Monday.
Campbell said, “agriculture should always be an academic discipline in our schools because it is fundamental to our survival. This initiative not only promotes hands on learning and practical skills for students but also encourages sustainable agricultural practices from a young age. By supporting these programs the Ministry is helping to create a generation of environmentally conscious individuals. We hope that this will help to educate students about agriculture, promote self sustainability and foster an overhaul connection to the environment.”
The Minister added that farming can, “also help to develop survival skills such as problem solving, team work and responsibility. Additionally these programs can contribute to the country’s food security by encouraging local food production and reducing out reliance on imported goods. It can also create opportunities for students to grow their own fruits and vegetables that helps to fosters healthy eating habits. By donating to schools around The Bahamas, the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources is investing in the future of agriculture and empowering young people to become active participants in sustainable food production.”
Fifteen schools around the country have been selected to take part in the program.
