Parts of Abaco was severely flooded on Sunday after torrential rain occurred on the island on Saturday. The flooding impacted the provision of electricity as well as other services.
According to Volunteer Firefighter, Danny Sawyer, the flooding was worsened by clogged trains. “One of the main reasons Marsh was flooded was tide was high and a lot of our drains and our drainage system here in town is not working. They haven’t been working since Dorian. So the couple drains that are working…with high tide it can’t run out anywhere so it’s going to stay inland and then it was going into some of the businesses and probably some of the homes. Then we have a lot of people riding around in their vehicles which didn’t help.”
Sawyer also relayed how the flood waters were reminiscent of the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. He said, “those who went through Dorian were probably getting flashbacks, you know. I mean it was torrential rain. I haven’t seen that in a long time and I live up in the back here in Marsh and the only time I’ve ever seen water in my yard is when Dorian. Yesterday you could actually floated a speed boat in my yard.”
The areas with the worst flood were Dundas and Murphy Towns, Marsh Harbour and Spring City.
