The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has announced it has launched an investigation into challenges being experienced by local telecommunications companies after receiving complaints about service.
URCA Corporate and Consumer Relations Manager Juan McCartney confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. He said, “it is of deep concern with URCA as far as the quality of service particularly in our family islands with the major service providers. And its something that they’re aware of and they’re partnering with us to see how we can best fix that.”
According to McCartney, URCA received complaints over the summer about the quality of service provided by telecommunications companies, Bahamas Telecommunication Company Ltd. (BTC) and Aliv. “We had asked the licensees to immediately remediate some of those issues which in a lot of instances they did. But we had also launched an investigation into quality of service issues that we were receiving throughout widespread communities in the family islands,” McCartney said.
McCartney said URCA want to work with the telecommunications providers to correct the issues to make sure that they are better able to deliver quality service in the country.
