Hundreds of volunteers throughout Grand Bahama turned out to take part in the Ocean Conservancy’s 40th annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
This global initiative is the largest one-day cleanup effort to remove trash and debris from the marine environment.
Volunteers participated by going to various beaches throughout Grand Bahama, from Gold Rock in the East to Bootle Bay in the West.
This year, Bahamas Information Services (BIS) North joined forces with EarthCare Bahamas, Bahamas National Trust, Lucaya International School, Kiwanis Lucaya and other volunteers for the cleanup effort at Gold Rock Beach, East Grand Bahama.
Volunteers not only removed debris, but also sorted and recorded the collected items by type using data cards. On Gold Rock Beach, a total of 253lbs of waste and recyclables were removed from the shoreline.
The collected data will be submitted to the Ocean Conservancy to help them continue tracking the most common types of litter and try to prevent these items from ending up on the shoreline in the future.
