The Ministers of Housing and Urban Renewal and for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Keith Bell and the Hon. Ginger Moxey recently gave an update on government’s housing initiatives on the island of Grand Bahama.
Bell spoke about lots the government hopes to acquire from the Grand Bahama Port Authority. He said, “the one hundred lots, we’re looking at further negotiations in respect to the acquisition of those one hundred lots but there are other areas that we’re looking at in Grand Bahama including West End as well.”
The Minister also spoke about the redevelopment of the area known as “The Ghetto”. He said, “we have a number of squatters who have taken possession of those areas. And so it is our intention to relocate those persons, acquire the property, demolish them and put affordable homes for Bahamians, particularly Grand Bahamians.”
For her part, the Hon. Ginger Moxey spoke to the efforts of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA) to repair damaged homes on the island. “The act that was put in place the exigency order really only covered East Grand Bahama and Abaco. And so, of course we had to review that and enact other legislation that allowed us to ensure that that entire island was covered. But we are looking out for the people.”
Moxey added that the DRA’s work has begun and that approximately one hundred homes being repaired currently in west Grand Bahama.
