During his contribution to the 2025/2026 budget debate last week in the House Of Assembly Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting, the Hon. Myles Laroda revealed that cases of mothers prostituting their daughters was increasing.
Laroda spoke with ZNS News about the issue on the sidelines of the Randol Fawkes Labour Day Parade on Friday. He said, “this has been a problem that’s going on, has been going on for a while. We just thought it was important to bring it to the attention of the Bahamian people because it’s more widespread and prevalent than most Bahamians understand.”
It is said that mothers exchange sex with their young daughters, mostly ages 14 to 16, for bill payment by adult males. Laroda informed that the police are currently involved in some of the matters. “But sometimes you’re better off to protect the identity of the children you’ll want to bring the parents or bring it to the attention of the public who the parents are because now you’ll know who the kids are,” he said.
According to the minister once the matters are reported to the police they take control of the matter. He said, “I’m not making any excuses. A lot of time it’s sad to say this but it’s just the reality of the day that mothers in particular find it necessary to prostitute their children and it’s shocking, it’s alarming, it should be widely discouraged but we cannot act as if it’s not happening.”
