The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) candidate for St. Barnabas, Senator Michael Halkitis held a ceremony to mark the official opening of his campaign headquarters over the weekend.
Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis was in attendance at the event along with PLP officials, campaign workers and residents and business owners from the constituency. Halkitis who also serves as Minister of Economic Affairs addressed the crowd telling them why he chose to run in the area.
He said, “when I choose St. Barnabas it was because growing up in this community I had the benefit of community. I walked to school everyday. I know and I understand so when we all interact I know the struggle of the single mothers who are trying to provide for their children, who are trying to give them a good education, who are trying to give them an opportunity because I saw my mother do it everyday.”
Halkitis also highlighted the high cost of living and some government initiatives to aimed to combat it. He said. “it is unacceptable for mother’s and families to have to spend $900 for a one bedroom apartment. So the government has to step in and build more rental units. It is unacceptable for landlords to say to mothers, yes we can rent to you but we don’t want any children. Where are the children supposed to go? And so your government accelerated its housing program and will be doing more right in this community.”
The Prime Minister and PLP Leader encouraged party supporters to stay the course ahead of the elections. “The wind is beneath our wings and behind our back and driving us toward the finishing line. We don’t need those winds to die down because the wind is being inspired by the work you do, being inspired by those voters that you carry to be registered or transferred. They inspire those winds. And so let us not let those winds die and you definitely will ensure victory on that date, on that date when the bell in rung.”
The headquarters is located on Market Street near First Baptist Church.
